West Basin Municipal Water District is a global leader in the water industry in water recycling, conservation, water resource management, youth and adult education, and oceanwater desalination. West Basin provides drinking water and recycled water to eight local retail water agencies including four cities, three private water companies and one county water agency. West Basin operates the state-of-the-art Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility and three satellite locations. West Basin utilizes various advanced treatment processes to produce five types of high-quality “designer” waters used for commercial, industrial and landscape purposes. The District is also researching environmentally-responsible oceanwater desalination and currently hosts tours at its Water Education Center in Redondo Beach, California and at the Edward C. THE POSITION: The Public Information Education Assistant will be assigned to the District’s Public Information and Education Department. The position will perform various tasks to support the District’s education programs by assisting in the following areas: the administration and coordination of facility tours; the research, development and delivery of educational presentations; tour guide training and evaluation of education programs; procurement and maintenance of education supplies and equipment; the collection and recording of program data for annual statistical reports; and will assist with additional department programs and presentations as needed. Project tasks may require occasional weekend and evening work.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Public Information Education Assistant must be a graduate student or junior/senior level undergraduate student attending an accredited college in good standing, or have graduated within the past year from an accredited college/university with a major in Education, Environmental Science, Communications or related field. The individual must possess excellent communication and organizational skills, the ability to work effectively in a team environment, and have comprehensive computer skills. The Assistant position is a part-time position. Work hours are flexible and average approximately 24 hours per week.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to occasionally lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds; kneel, crouch, stand, walk, twist, reach or bend for prolonged periods of time, and occasionally be available at times other than regularly scheduled work hours, such as nights and weekends. Such weekend and night work may include leading facility tours and attending community outreach events. Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License, proof of insurance and an acceptable driving record are required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. The candidate is required to use his or her own vehicle with mileage reimbursed at the standard IRS rate.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: This part-time, at-will position pays $12.00 - $16.00 per hour, depending on qualifications. This position is eligible to receive pro-rated vacation, holiday, and sick leave and is eligible for enrollment in CalPERS after working 1,000 hours in a fiscal year.
